Fullmetal alchemist originally followed the manga, but then branched off and ended differently. Fma ending is ok, fmab ending it's outstanding, but in my opinion, both stories are worth watching. You can watch fmab without needing fma03 first.

Fma has an anime original ending while fmab has an ending similar to the manga. Like, i think the nina part is more expanded in the first fma than fma:b.not 100% sure, but that's what i remember at least. Fma brotherhood, on the other hand, follows the manga religiously and hence, has unimportant fillers that can be skipped.

On one hand my friend thinks he should start on fma the original so that way when he gets to brother hood and can see all the improvements and differences between the two, but i think he should start with fmab because i think it is the better show and easier to get into. Then maybe watch the old fma out of curiosity.

It has some interesting ideas and moments but overall i can't say it was actually good. If youre from one of the few countries that can watch fmab with japanese audio + with 11 different subtitles on youtube at 720p, go there if not, good luck. If not, watch fma first and then watch fmab.

They are two different shows that have similar first few episodes, and the same characters for the most part. You don’t need to watch fullmetal alchemist to watch brotherhood. Let me tell you, fma was damn boring that.
